It was a year of musical successes in the local and international shores as a slew of songs captured our ears and made their way into our playlists. The OPM scene, for example, saw Somedaydream and Angeline Quinto rise to countdown dominancy last year. Meanwhile, Adele and Jessie J edged out other music mavens with their irresistibly catchy tunes.
So before a new wave of music hits flood our already-packed iPods, let’s look back at the songs that claimed the top spots in various Yearend countdowns. Listen up!
Jeepney Love Story
Yeng Constantino
Penned by Yeng Constatino, “Jeepney Love Story” was awarded Favorite Music Video and Favorite Song at the 2011 MYX Music Awards. Constantino also bagged the Favorite Female Artist title. This is the number one song in 103.5 Wow FM’s Pinoy Playbor Yearend Countdown.
Porque
Maldita
The breakthrough OPM band that charmed the airwaves with their Baybayin-Tagalog-Chabacano song “Porque”. The song went number one in 103.1 M.O.R. Baguio Top 100 Songs of 2011 Yearend Countdown and number two on Tambayan 101.1 9′s Tambayan Top 10 Yearend Countdown.
Everything and More
David Archuleta
Archuleta, who is taking a two-year hiatus to become a missionary for The Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints, still managed to rake in music attention for the song “Everything and More” even without a music video. The song received strong airplays courtesy of the many die-hard Archuleta fans scrambling for more music from the American Idol alumni. The song is included in the repackaged edition of “The Other Side of Down.”
The song snatched the top spot in Barangay LS 97.1’s The Big 10 Yearend Countdown. Over at RX 93.1, Archuleta held the 29th spot.
The Lazy Song
Bruno Mars
The third single from his debut studio album Doo-Wops & Hooligans, “The Lazy Song” climbed to number one in the UK. It was his fourth number one song although it only peaked at the fourth spot in the US. The laidback tune was the number 1 song in 103.5 Wow FM’s Yearend Top 20 Countdown.
Patuloy Ang Pangarap
Angeline Quinto
The Star Power: Search for the Next Female Pop Superstar champion quickly rose to the top of the charts with the song “Patuloy Ang Pangarap.” It won Song of the Year in the 3rd PMPC Star Awards for Music and Best Secular Song in the 33rd Catholic Mass Media Awards.
Tambayan 101.9’s Top 10 of 2011 featured Quinto’s “Patuloy Ang Pangarap” at number one, while it landed at the 15th spot over at 106.7 Energy FM’s Yearend Top 20. Star FM’s Nationwide Yearend Top 20 presented the song at the 7th position.
Give Me Everything
Pitbull feat. Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer
The second single from Pitbull’s studio album Planet Pit, “Give Me Everything” was his first chart-topping song in the UK and the Billboard Hot 100.
Locally, the song dominated Wave 89.1’s Soul Review Yearend Countdown, while it sits at the 7th spot over at Magic 89.9’s Magic 30 Yearend.
Someone Like You
Adele
Inspired by a past relationship and her coming to terms with it, Adele received a barrage of critical acclaim for the song “Someone Like You”, one of them being Tom Breihan of Pitchfork Media saying, “sometimes, pop music can still break your heart.”
Written by Adele and Dan Wilson, the heart-wrenching tune claimed the top seat in Home Radio 97.9’s Easy 20 Yearend Countdown. Meanwhile, RX 93.1 positioned the song at number 17. “Someone Like You” is one of Adele’s two number one hits in the Philippines. The song is nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance in the 2012 Grammy Awards.
Pumped Up Kicks
Foster The People
Released on September 2011, it was the group’s debut single and already it had spent eight consecutive weeks at the third spot of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song also received a Grammy Award Nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
“Pumped Up Kicks” tops RT 99.5’s Yearend Countdown and lands on the 19th spot in Magic 89.9’s Yearend chart.
Kunin Mo Na Ang Lahat Sa Akin
Angeline Quinto
Quinto’s performance of the song “Kunin Mo Na Ang Lahat Sa Akin”, which is the theme song of the hit television series Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin, also earned her the top spot at 106.7 Energy FM’s Yearend Top 20. The song also made its presence felt in Tambayan 101.9’s Top 10 of 2011 and Star FM’s Nationwide Yearend Top 20.
It was definitely a year filled with successes as Quinto also won Best New Artist at the 24th Aliw Awards and 3rd PMPC Star Awards for Music. Her latest song “Saan Darating Ang Umaga” has been receiving wide airplay as well.
Firework
Katy Perry
Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson in real life, the singer who kissed a girl and liked it, cements her hit-making prowess with the song “Firework.” The third single from the Teenage Dream album, it peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent four non-consecutive weeks there.
“Firework” hit the number one spot on the MYX M.I.T. 20 Yearend Special and 89.9’s Magic 30 Yearend Countdown. The song bagged Song of the Year, while Perry snagged the Female Artist of the Year title. In addition, “Firework” is also nominated for Record of The Year in the upcoming 2012 Grammy Awards.
Moves Like Jagger
Maroon 5 feat. Christina Aguilera
First performed in the hit reality singing competition The Voice, Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera moved quickly through the charts with the infectious “Moves Like Jagger” shimmying its way to people’s iPods. The first top ten single for Maroon5 and Christina Aguilera since 2008, the song is nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 54th Grammy Awards.
The Jagger craze drove them to number one in RX 93.1’s Yearend chart, number four in Magic 89.9, number three in Mellow 94.7, number 6 in Barangay LS 97.1 and number 5 in the MYX Hit Chart.
Price Tag
Jessie J feat. B.o.B
The second single from Jessie J’s debut studio album “Who You Are” is this feel good track co-written by Jessie J, which debuted at number one in the UK, Ireland and New Zealand. One of the year’s anthems, “Price Tag” led the chart of 107.5 Win Radio’s Top 20 of 2011 and Star FM’s Nationwide Yearend Top 20.
Rolling in the Deep
Adele
Another Adele hit for the year is Billboard’s Song of the Year “Rolling in the Deep”, which stayed on top of the Billboard charts for seven consecutive weeks. Already Billboard’s Artist of the Year, Adele has her hands full with three Grammy nods for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Short Form Music Video.
The Adele fever was also on a high here in Manila, with RX 93.1 giving her the Female Artist of the Year honor. Meanwhile, the song topped Mellow 94.7’s Top 100 Yearend Countdown, while it took seventh and 13th position at RX 93.1 and Magic 89.9.
Hey Daydreamer
Somedaydream
Rez Toledo a.k.a. Somedaydream made a splash in the OPM scene and caught the attention of local radio stations with his synth-pop effort “Hey Daydreamer,” which quickly topped the charts. The song was even used in the Cornetto Disc commercial, further proof of just how well-received the song is.
The song “Hey Daydreamer” topped various Yearend countdowns. Over at RX 93.1, the tune snagged the top spot in the OPM Yearend Countdown. Toledo also bagged the OPM Artist of the Year award of the station.
The song enjoyed further success in the Pinoy MYX and MYX Hit Chart Yearend Countdowns. Toledo is the first male Pinoy artist to achieve such feat.
